Haymarket is an area located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated in the southern part of the Sydney central business district within Sydney’s Local Government Area that is part of Sydney, which is part of the City of Sydney.
Haymarket encompasses the city’s Chinatown, Thaitown and Railway Square localities. Haymarket is located near Darling Harbour and is surrounded by suburbs such as Ultimo, Chippendale, Surry Hills and Surry Hills, and Sydney CBD.
In the census in 2016 there were 87.8 percent of the population who were foreign birthed in, which is the highest in any Australian suburban area. The most popular languages were Thai 20.4 percent, Mandarin 20.3%, Indonesian 10.2 percent, Cantonese 5.1% and Korean 4.8 percentage.
For Asian style food it is amazing. The are has changed a lot on the last 2 years. A lot less university students, restaurants have moved or closed but to locals it still holds many attractions.
The Haymarket fresh fruit and vegetables section on ground floor is great. The market stalls when open have just about every knick-knack you can think off.
The new section at what’s now called Darling Square is cool, especially at night. Darling Square is where the old Entertainment Centre used to be just west of China Town.
Getting around & Transport
Central Station of the railway is situated near the southern border.
Haymarket is also served by Haymarket is also served by Dulwich Hill Line of Sydney’s light rail system which has stations at Central, Capitol Square and Paddy’s Markets. The light rail runs on the former railway corridor for freight. A small section isn’t utilized as a light rail since it has been transformed into the Goods Line walking connection that connects Railway Square and Central station.
